I am a former police officer in Athens and I have since left and moved to north metro Atlanta to work for another police department.
I want to say that crime in Athens is out of control and the mayor and commission refuse to allow the police department to be proactive in our enforcement. The special operation team was reduced from 20 officers to just 3 officers. This team was used to supress crime and mainly drugs in the high crime areas of Athens and now that they were gone crime has shot right back up. Athens is a city that is a safe haven for career criminals, judges keep giving low bond amounts to people with 50 page rap sheets. Its a city that allows a huge nasty homeless camp called "tent city" to stay which to us officers is a major source of crime, drug problems and a safe haven for stolen property and wanted people.
In any other county it would be declared a public nuisance and cleaned up. Athens has a property crime rate TWICE the national or state average but the mayor and commission refuse to allow police officer to do their jobs, instead they are more concerned about the community seeing officers as being too hard. I guess they will just content with high crime, tons of drugs in the housing projects, and a safe haven city for homeless criminals.
After having worked narcotics in Athens I would NEVER allow my daughter to go to UGA. Athens is a city that floats on hard drugs and alcohol.
I wish someone with some guts to clean up Athens would be elected and take charge.
Athens-Clarke PD has a very high turnover rate becuase officer become fed up with dealing in all the politics of the job rather than just going out and doing their jobs. I know so many great officers who left ACCPD to go work for metro Atlanta agencies for better pay and working conditions. This is a problem that has never even been address in Athens becuase the mayor and commission just dont care.

My wife and I (long-time Athenians) left the People's Republic of Clarke County for Jackson County for this very reason.

Athens is a city slowly melting into a repository of corruption simply because of the total lack of courage of it's city leadership. Frankly you desearve Heidi.

We talked our niece out of attending UGA because of the environment surronding UGA. She happily graduated from U of Tennessee last year.

Athens will never improve in any area: crime, cost of living, jobs, quality of life, etc, until you throw the Socialists out.
